Killingworth House

Killingworth, CT

A small white farmhouse on a tree – lined road had been in the family for many years as a weekend getaway. The owners wished to double the size of the house to include a new large living room for entertaining, a master bedroom wing, and a kitchen and sunroom. However, they did not want the house to look big – or out of place –on the narrow road.

The small scale was maintained by making the additions a group of barn-like buildings in colors different from the original house. The master bedroom and a porte-cochere at the family entrance are simple, gable-roofed structures, painted barn red. The new “great room” structure is painted slate gray to blend into the shadow under the huge maple trees and the entrance and the sun room are painted spruce green, further differentiating its parts. The original house remains white, as the focal point of the composition.
